FAQs
9. What’s in it for the community?
It is too early to say exactly what the benefits or negative impacts of hosting a facility might be. One of the roles of the Partnership is to look into the possible benefits and negative impacts with Government, before a decision is taken to move to the next stage or not.
Potential benefits might include:
- Jobs from construction work
- Jobs during site operation
- Investment from the Government for long-term improvements in the area
Potential negative impacts might include:
- The impact of construction on the community and its transportation links
- Concerns about the safety of a facility
- A negative perception of the area hosting the facility
What is clear is that there would have to be significant investment by the Government in any area that agrees to host the facility. The Government has talked about providing ‘benefits which may be commensurate with developing the social and economic wellbeing of a community that has decided to fulfil such an essential service to the nation’. This will be a key issue which the Partnership will discuss with local people.
